Panchang FAQs
What does Panchang tell you for today?
A Panchang tells you the five astronomical elements that define the day: tithi (lunar day), vara (weekday), nakshatra (lunar mansion), yoga (sun-moon combination), and karana (half-tithi). Together, these five elements describe the shape of the day and help you understand which hours are traditionally considered auspicious for different activities. See today's Panchang for your city on the Today Panchang page.
Is Panchang different for different cities?
Yes. Because the sun and moon are at slightly different positions in the sky for observers in different cities, tithi transitions, nakshatra changes, sunrise, sunset, and muhurat windows all shift based on longitude and latitude. A Panchang computed for Delhi will differ from one computed for Mumbai on the same date. DevDarsha provides city-specific Panchangs for supported Indian cities.
How do you read a Panchang?
Start by identifying the tithi (lunar day). Then note the vara (weekday), nakshatra (which lunar mansion the moon is in), yoga (the sun-moon combination), and karana (half-tithi). Read these five together as a complete description of the day. Most Panchangs also show sunrise and sunset times, moonrise and moonset times, and specific muhurat windows such as abhijit muhurat.
What is the difference between Panchang and horoscope?
A Panchang is an almanac: it describes the astronomical positions and calculated elements of a given day. It does not make predictions about your personal future. A horoscope is a personalized interpretation based on your birth chart and current planetary transits. Panchangs are the same for everyone on a given date, adjusted for location; horoscopes are personal to each individual.
Can I check today's Panchang online?
Yes. DevDarsha provides a free daily Panchang for supported cities. Open the Today Panchang page to see the five elements, auspicious windows, caution windows, festival dates, and city-specific timings.
Tithi FAQs
What tithi is today?
You can find today's tithi on the Today Panchang page for your city. The page shows the tithi name, when it ends, and the next tithi that follows. Remember that tithis flip at different times depending on your location.
How many tithis are there in a lunar month?
There are thirty tithis in a complete lunar month, from new moon to new moon. They are divided into two pakshas of fifteen tithis each: the bright half, called shukla paksha, from new moon to full moon; and the dark half, called krishna paksha, from full moon back to new moon.
What is the most auspicious tithi?
Different tithis are auspicious for different purposes. Tithi auspiciousness depends on the specific act you are planning: a wedding, a naming ceremony, a house inauguration, or another observance. Ekadashi is widely observed with fasting, while full moon and new moon have their own ritual significance.
What happens when a tithi is skipped or repeated?
When the moon moves slowly, a tithi can stretch across two sunrises; this is called vriddhi tithi. When the moon moves fast, a tithi can end between sunrises without being the prevailing tithi at dawn; this is called kshaya tithi, or a skipped tithi. Both are natural consequences of using a lunar yardstick.
Which tithis are inauspicious for starting new work?
Tradition considers certain tithis less favourable for new beginnings. Chaturdashi and amavasya are often avoided. Specific rites have their own rules, so consult the traditional calendar and practices of your community or speak with a priest familiar with your tradition.
Nakshatra FAQs
Which nakshatra is today?
You can find today's nakshatra on the Today Panchang page for your city. The page shows the nakshatra name, the pada or quarter when available, when it ends, and the next nakshatra that follows. Since nakshatras are measured by the moon's position, transition times differ by city.
How is nakshatra different from rashi?
Nakshatra and rashi are two different divisions of the moon's path. A rashi is 30 degrees, while a nakshatra is 13 degrees 20 minutes. Both matter in Hindu astrology and calendar-keeping, but they measure different cycles.
How do I find my birth nakshatra?
Find the moon's position at the moment of your birth. This is usually available in your birth chart. A priest or astrologer can compute it if you provide your exact birth date, time, and location.
Which nakshatra is considered best for starting new things?
Rohini, Pushya, Hasta, Anuradha, and Revati nakshatras are traditionally considered favourable for new beginnings and muhurat. The best nakshatra still depends on the act you are beginning, such as marriage, business, construction, or travel.
How many nakshatras are there?
There are twenty-seven nakshatras that divide the moon's path into equal 13 degree 20 minute segments. Each nakshatra is divided into four padas, or quarters, of 3 degrees 20 minutes each.
Muhurat FAQs
How do I find today's auspicious muhurat?
Start with the muhurat section for your city to see auspicious and caution windows. Cross-check the times against today's Panchang because sunrise and local time affect the calculation. For major rites, consult your family priest with the date, time, city, and birth details of the principals.
What are the five elements used to calculate a muhurat?
A muhurat is built from the five Panchang elements: tithi, vara, nakshatra, yoga, and karana. A complete muhurat assessment also includes auspicious and inauspicious time windows such as rahu kaal, gulika kaal, yamaganda, and abhijit muhurat.
Is there always a good muhurat every day?
Not always. Some days lack a favourable alignment of the five elements for a specific act. A marriage day, for instance, requires specific tithi-nakshatra combinations, yoga considerations, and the absence of inauspicious time windows. This is why muhurat planning is usually done in advance.
What is the difference between choghadiya and muhurat?
Choghadiya is a simplified time-division system of roughly two-hour windows that classifies each window as favourable or unfavourable for general activities. Muhurat is a precise astrological calculation tailored to a specific act, based on the five Panchang elements and, for major rites, personal birth details.
Yoga FAQs
Which yoga is today in the Panchang?
You can find today's yoga on the Today Panchang page for your city. The page shows the yoga name, when it ends, and the next yoga that follows. Like other Panchang elements, yoga transitions can happen at any hour of the day.
What is the most auspicious yoga in Panchang?
Siddha, Shubha, Brahma, and Aindra are traditionally considered broadly favourable yogas. Auspiciousness still depends on the specific act. Marriage, business, naming, construction, and travel can each have preferred yogas.
What does Vishkumbha yoga mean?
Vishkumbha is one of the twenty-seven yogas. It is traditionally considered inauspicious for starting new ventures. Its practical meaning depends on classical interpretation and your tradition's reading.
How is yoga different from nakshatra and tithi?
Tithi is the lunar day, based on the moon's angular separation from the sun. Nakshatra is the lunar mansion, based on the moon's position in the zodiac. Yoga is the combined position of the sun and moon. All three are independent measurements.
Karana FAQs
What is today's karana?
You can find today's karana on the Today Panchang page for your city. The page shows the karana name and when it ends. Since karana is tied to tithi, it flips at the midpoint of every tithi.
How many karanas are there and what are their names?
There are eleven karana names that cycle through the month. Four karanas are fixed: Kimstughna, Bava, Balava, and Kaulava. Seven karanas are moving: Taitila, Gara, Vanija, Vishti, Shakuni, Chatushpada, and Naga.
What is Vishti or Bhadra karana and why is it avoided?
Vishti karana, also called Bhadra, is traditionally considered inauspicious for new beginnings. Many priests counsel avoiding muhurat that falls within Vishti karana. Since karana is finer-grained than tithi, a Vishti karana is easier to avoid than an entire tithi.
How long does one karana last?
One karana lasts about twelve hours on average, exactly half a tithi. Since tithis vary between roughly twenty and twenty-six hours, karanas also vary. The exact duration depends on the moon's speed and where in the month you are.
